I bought the new World Platinum to replace my SG5 Sky Caddie which worked fine but had the yearly fee to download courses. I was paying $70. a year just to make it somewhat convenient to use. I still had to attach it to my computer and pay an extra $20. just to store 20 instead of 10 courses in the unit at any one time. I set the sky caddie on the shelf and bought the Golf Buddy out of principle plus I'm saving the $70.
That being said, I'm quite pleased with the Golf Buddy. Yardages seem acccurate. I've used it at about 10 courses so far in Florida and Nevada. You can fire it up any time, even if you're not at a course and it will show you all the courses in the area. When at the course it automatically recognizes the course and what hole you are on. All in all it works well. Battery life seems good. I like the fact that it has a charger un like the U-Pro which uses AA batteries. It also has a pretty nice score keeping function and some other stuff which I havn't really used.
My only complaint is that one time on one hole there was a well established creek crossing the fairway about 30 yards in front on the green and nothing showed that on the Golf Buddy. I've noticed a couple of other times that some hazards seem to be missing. But I also experienced that with the Sky Caddie from time to time. That made me lack a little trust in the unit.
If you call Golf Buddy Corporate on the phone and ask for a technician to get some questions answered, you get a young lady who indentifies herself as the technical person. She was very nice but I didn't get the feeling that she was really a tech person, maybe more like someone trained to answer questions from guys like me. She told me that Golf Buddy walks and maps the courses just like Sky Caddie. Do you believe that? I've also talked with Sky Caddie on the phone and wasn't thrilled with their customer service either.
In conclusion, I think the Golf Buddy WP is really good. I'm glad I bought it.
